 For over 10 years Skyland Church has supported the work of the Baobob Home by contributing tuition for  children at Steven Tito Academy, by buying books and uniforms for the graduates of Steven Tito Academy for secondary school, and by purchasing children's books about  HIV for their Stronger Together program. 

Currently Skyland Church supports Samira S ( 2nd Grade Tuition at Steven Tito Academy) and Maimuna (Secondary School tuition support for books/uniforms and transportation)

Terri Place Mwando, the Founder of the Baobob Home, along with her husband Caito started the Baobob Home in 2004. Terri wrote about the Pandemic last summer 
"We have been so so fortunate here. We were barely affected by Covid compared to the rest of the world. Our farm is growing strong and the kids are all in great health. The school is up to 178 kids and we will stop at 200. " 

The Baobab Home, located on our 12-acre renewable energy farm, has been helping Tanzanian children in need for over 16 years. We currently run four main programs:

Children's Home

The Baobab Home began as an orphanage for babies and a support center for teenage boys who were living on the streets. Over the last 16 years, we've raised 11 amazing children and provided secondary education and college opportunities for dozens of young adults.

Primary School

In 2013 we launched Steven Tito Academy, a primary school that offers high-quality education in a safe and supportive environment. This feels revolutionary since much of Tanzania's education system still practices rote learning and corporal punishment. We currently have 162 students who are getting a world-class education taught in English, and our first graduating class had some of the top test scores in the region. 

HIV Support

We provide a variety of programs for families and children affected by HIV. We've served over 270,000 breakfasts to HIV+ patients during their monthly check-ups. We also have an active group to help children with HIV find the support (Stronger Together) they need to help them stay healthy in mind, body, and spirit.

Outreach Program

Since the needs of each family and child are unique and varied, we reserve some of our funding for general outreach. We have built houses and created income generation projects for those living in poverty. We have also helped young people get into drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs. Emergency medical care is often a need of the community as well, and our general outreach program helps us provide money for these health care emergencies.

  The Finance Team added a new member, Jackie Seymour and a consultant, Terrie Landini to our team in June. In late June the Finance team met and agreed upon a process to make recommendations as to the management, use and investment of our monies for the benefit of our Skyland Church community. We divided into two sub-groups to research opportunities and to develop rules and policies as well as recommendations for the use of the monies. We will keep in mind the history of the Milberry fund and the Endowment. One sub-group is tasked with research on the Milberry Fund and Endowment Investments. The other sub-group is researching opportunities for the Board Designated Reserves. The Finance Team will include ESG filters (Environmental, Social, Governance) while researching the investment opportunities. Missions Board Update September 2022

 Before After Change is in the air! You have probably noticed a few changes around the Food Pantry last month as we work to make the pantry integrate into Skyland's operations.  We are working to winterize the pantry next and hope we can do that by October before the rains come. Outside Pantry The front porch has been cleared and we are working to get the pantry winterized before the rains come.  There are two refrigerators and two metal shelves on the left front side of the church below the handicap ramp.  We chose this spot since it is the least sunny, easiest to access and would not require us to add a driveway between the church and the shed.  That area is too steep for disabled people to use.  New Shelving The two new metal shelves are up and running. They were paid for from the Mission Board budget. They even kept things dry with our tiny 5 minute recent rains. Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:21 This is that most wonderful season of the church year.  No, I speak not of Easter, though that is also a wonderful season.  I speak of stewardship season.  The Church has always thrived on the generous sharing of gifts.  From the people who fed and housed Jesus and his disciples as they traversed the countryside to the lending of a donkey to ride into Jerusalem and a room for their Passover feast to the gift of nard to anoint Jesus' feet to even the lending of a tomb for Jesus' body to be laid through the sabbath, the generosity of Jesus' followers is what enabled his ministry. Two thousand years later, this same generosity enables our ministry in Jesus' name.  In his Sermon on the Mount, Jesus reminded his people, reminded us all, that we are willing to invest in what we value and what we invest in we come to value even more.
