News from the Community June 2022

Skyland Community Church supports Loma Prieta Education Fund Did you sense positive vibrations on the mountain last Wednesday? Skyland Community Church donated the use of Whitaker Hall for a yoga class, a fund-raising event for the Loma Prieta Education Fund .  Sara Steffen, the organizer for the event, wrote, "Thank you for ALL of your support securing Whitaker for our LPEF yoga event tonight. We were able to do yoga outside and everyone loved the space!" Many of the young moms who participated had never been to Skyland before so this was a great introduction to our lovely facility.  Thank you to all the people who helped make this positive community event happen, Kevin and Deana Arnold who helped with details and lock-up, Rev. Melanie who stayed late to welcome the participants, Jeremy Cole and Anne Evans who mopped the floor, Food Pantry volunteers, who tidied the hall and LPEF for all that they do for our students.  A win-win...money raised for education, youthful ene

Vision and Assessment Team Update June 2022

Image
Ministerial (Minister and Ministry) Assessment  “The wisdom of the prudent is to give thought to their ways” from Proverbs 14:8 “Because ministry never happens in isolation and because effective ministry is responsive to the Spirit’s prompting and the needs of the congregation, regular assessment of ministry is a critical element to developing and maintaining healthy, thriving congregations and healthy, growing leaders.” From the UCC publication “A Sure Foundation” In our Bylaws and in the Letter of Call we (all of us) agreed to do a ministerial assessment at least every two years. This assessment encompasses both the minister and our shared ministry. The goal is to become aware of areas that provide enrichment and areas where some growth and improvement would strengthen our shared ministry.  The Vision and Assessment Team met with Rev. Melanie, and the leaders of the church to review the proposed assessment and gather further input and comments. In the second week of June we will be

Guatemala Foreign Student Education Update

Letter from our sponsored student Rosa in Guatemala Skyland Community Church supports Rosa Isabel Xiquin Yojcom, age 8, younger sister of Francisco in the program Creando Mi Futuro in San Pedro la Laguna, Guatemala.   In the past the church has supported Francisco who this year decided it was more important for him to play sports on Saturday mornings. Mira-Talbott-Pope founded the program a number of years ago to support the families and children in this small mountain town through art instruction, homework help and food. The translation of the letter from Rosa says:  Dear sponsor,   How are you? I hope you are well. Thank you for your support.  I am learning to read and write and draw.  I hope you can see us someday.   Thank you for helping my family and to Miranda for giving us a food basket every month.  You have helped me a lot and I appreciate what you give us.  I am very happy and very grateful for the effort that you have given. Sincerely Rosa Isabel Xiquin Yojcum.    ________

Message from Rev. Melanie for June 2022

Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. --Romans 12:12   This verse is in the middle of a list of ways that one who follows Jesus begins to live.  Some of those ways are are how we are to behave toward others, but this passage calls on us to look inward.  Roman Christ-followers were experiencing some harrowing times in the first century.  While Rome generally tolerated other regions even at its heart in the city of Rome, if there was any trouble there would be punishment, suppression, and/or exile.     Paul wrote to the Church in Rome to remind the people of who they were and the importance of living the lives they were called to live as they followed Jesus.  This included, especially in difficult times, remembering to look within for hope, patience, and perseverance.   We have been through a lot these last few years.  We have come through much, and signs of life are returning.  We recently hosted a yoga class that was a fundraiser for LPEF, and we will s
