Skyland Community Church Council Minutes

September 20, 2021

Meeting called to order at 8:37 a.m. with 7 members present.

Opening prayer was given by Rev. Patricia Wood.

Covenant was read by Randy McCalla

Council minutes from August 16 were presented and it was moved and seconded to approve as submitted. Approved unanimously.

Treasurer’s report:

·      Receipts were a little above plan and expenses were a little below plan.

·      The Missions budget section is still being revised from the older format and discrepancies are being resolved.

·      Discussion was held re. keeping track of contributions, expenditures and other activities for the food pantry so that we can be aware of what it would take to replace the activity if the supplying agencies or contributors were to change their donations. Moved, seconded, and unanimously approved to do so.

Old business: no topics.

New business: No questions on minister’s report or other business.

·      COVID 19 guidelines:

o   Backup people for Zoom aspects of the Sunday Worship Service are being trained to help Zoom support team.

o   Guidelines were amended and will be sent out for review.

o   Gerald will buy 3 or 4 air filter/purifiers for sanctuary and Whitaker Hall. Several people offered to donate money toward the purchase of the air filters.

o   Concerns about cleaning deeper than the current basic weekly cleaning were referred to the Trustees.

 

·      Church Google Accounts and Archives:

o   Permissions for the Google account will be updated to include Leslie Meehan and Rev. Melanie.

o   Leslie, Rev. Melanie, and Brian Wood volunteered to discuss and setup the Google directory and archives.

o   Physical File Cabinet with many archives has been accessed.

 

·      Food Pantry:

o   Currently 20+ volunteers

o   Need vacation fill-in drivers for weekly food pickups: Tuesday, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. Robin Porter may be a guide to how to do this.

o   Need another organizing person for scheduling backup and details, perhaps a Volunteer Coordinator.

Finance Team Update August 2021

  The Finance Team added a new member, Jackie Seymour and a consultant, Terrie Landini to our team in June. In late June the Finance team met and agreed upon a process to make recommendations as to the management, use and investment of our monies for the benefit of our Skyland Church community. We divided into two sub-groups to research opportunities and to develop rules and policies as well as recommendations for the use of the monies. We will keep in mind the history of the Milberry fund and the Endowment. One sub-group is tasked with research on the Milberry Fund and Endowment Investments. The other sub-group is researching opportunities for the Board Designated Reserves. The Finance Team will include ESG filters (Environmental, Social, Governance) while researching the investment opportunities. Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:21 This is that most wonderful season of the church year.  No, I speak not of Easter, though that is also a wonderful season.  I speak of stewardship season.  The Church has always thrived on the generous sharing of gifts.  From the people who fed and housed Jesus and his disciples as they traversed the countryside to the lending of a donkey to ride into Jerusalem and a room for their Passover feast to the gift of nard to anoint Jesus' feet to even the lending of a tomb for Jesus' body to be laid through the sabbath, the generosity of Jesus' followers is what enabled his ministry. Two thousand years later, this same generosity enables our ministry in Jesus' name.  In his Sermon on the Mount, Jesus reminded his people, reminded us all, that we are willing to invest in what we value and what we invest in we come to value even more.
