Message from Rev Melanie for September 2021

"Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert."

(Isaiah 43:18-19 English Standard Version)

As we come around to fall, we once again come to a time of new beginnings.  Though fewer of us traveled this summer and when we did most of us didn't go as far as we once would, fall is traditionally a time to come home, a time to return to routine.

Some of our families are doing just that, with children and teens returning to school after 17 months at home.   Some of our congregation are returning to church in the sanctuary on Sunday mornings while others continue to participate from home in a new format.  Remember when we used to talk about returning to "normal?"  What we have learned from this pandemic that we had not yet learned from fires and hurricanes and earthquakes is that we aren't returning to some previous "normal."  We are creating a new way of being.

Creation is hard work.  Think about it-even God had to rest after six days of creating.  We are creating new ways of being church, including new ways of participating in church on Sundays and new ways of participating in being the church every day.  The good news is that while we still have the occasional awkward moment or technological glitch to deal with, we have ways that are working and now people can participate who would not easily be able to if we returned to the old "normal."

As we head into fall, let's commit to leaving behind "normal," whatever that meant, and look ahead to partnership and community in the ways that have opened up for us.  We will need partnership and community to face the challenges ahead.  The good news is that we already have plenty of practice with this creating stuff.
