Missions Board Update September 2022

 Before

After

Change is in the air!

You have probably noticed a few changes around the Food Pantry last month as we work to make the pantry integrate into Skyland's operations.
We are working to winterize the pantry next and hope we can do that by October before the rains come.

Outside Pantry
The front porch has been cleared and we are working to get the pantry winterized before the rains come.
There are two refrigerators and two metal shelves on the left front side of the church below the handicap ramp.
We chose this spot since it is the least sunny, easiest to access and would not require us to add a driveway between the church and the shed.
That area is too steep for disabled people to use.

New Shelving
The two new metal shelves are up and running. They were paid for from the Mission Board budget.
They even kept things dry with our tiny 5 minute recent rains.

Inside pantry
The garage clear out looks great!  The Trustees are working to update the shed. When this job is completed the food will be moved out of Whitaker Hall.

Volunteers
Our family volunteers are back at school now and they were GREAT to have. We have 4 more excellent ones filling all of our Volunteer slots.  We are still looking for Substitutes. so contact Shannon if you are interested in joining.

Food Distribution
San Agustin Church (more info at the bottom of this article) is now delivering us full cases of vegetables which takes less time than sorting the fruits and vegetables that they provide every week on Weds.
Everett Farms has been donating at least once a week and we are happy to have the organic produce.

Donations
We need coffee, oil, cereal, chili, soup, paper products and toiletries if you would like to donate.

Church Meeting updates
Church members met after the service on Sunday, August 28th to discuss the future plans for the Food Pantry.
We had two hybrid sessions on zoom and off.
Church Moderator John Conkle gave an excellent presentation on the history of the pantry and how we will move forward to make it happen.
Members of the church had many great suggestions for making the shed work better.
The Trustees, Missions Board and Pantry Integration Team will be working with a contractor to update the shed.
The Finance Team approved funds for these upgrades from the carry over funds from the past few years.

San Agustin Church of Scotts Valley was our first food distributor when we began. Since we are a smaller food pantry, they order extra for us and wonderful Jan Parker and her backup John Heyes pick up and deliver the food to Skyland.  Second Harvest of Santa Cruz County provides them fresh fruits and veggies and staples.  We are lucky to have this great source of food!
