Skyland Community Church

                          Minutes of the Council Meeting on August 21, 2022

Attendees: Reverend Melanie, Reverend Patricia, Anne Evans, Jan Parker, Gerald Alonzo, John Heyes

Members not in attendance: Jackie Seymour, Shannon Edwards

Call to Order: John Conkle opened the meeting at 1:05 p.m.

Opening Prayer: given by Reverend Melanie

Behavioral Covenant: read by John Conkle

Review and Approval of Minutes: Gerald moved to approve the minutes of the June 19 meeting, Anne seconded, and the minutes were approved unanimously. Gerald moved to approve the minutes of the July 17 meeting, Patricia seconded, and the minutes were approved unanimously.

Treasurer’s Report:

Gerald highlighted the following details:

·       Pledges are $1,500 below budget for the month; however, income is close to expectations.

·       There are no unusual or unexpected expenses.

·       $38,000 from Wells Fargo checking and savings accounts has been invested in UCC’s Cornerstone Fund. This investment represents an emergency fund.

·       Skyland Community Church’s support of Mountain Jam is akin to a Missions project as funds raised will support music programs at local schools.

Old Business

Anne reported that attempts to recruit coffee hour help did not produce a roster. Tasks are undertaken by those attending. Council members agreed that this solution is adequate for now.

On behalf of the Finance Team, Anne explained that a procedure has been created for unanticipated projects (those not included in the current budget).

Two projects deemed high priority are repair of the shed and construction of a shelter for two outside refrigerators and food. Funds are available for both.

Skyland members will have an opportunity to ask questions about these projects. The Council decided to have two concurrent meetings on August 28 for this purpose.

Reverend Melanie clarified that only she will need to have a background check since there are no volunteers working with children at Skyland.

John Conkle formally proposed the adoption of “Skyland Community Church” as the official name of our corporation. The Council unanimously assented. The clerk will sign the resolution document and submit it to the appropriate state office.

John Conkle ended the meeting at 2:13 p.m.

Finance Team Update August 2021

  The Finance Team added a new member, Jackie Seymour and a consultant, Terrie Landini to our team in June. In late June the Finance team met and agreed upon a process to make recommendations as to the management, use and investment of our monies for the benefit of our Skyland Church community. We divided into two sub-groups to research opportunities and to develop rules and policies as well as recommendations for the use of the monies. We will keep in mind the history of the Milberry fund and the Endowment. One sub-group is tasked with research on the Milberry Fund and Endowment Investments. The other sub-group is researching opportunities for the Board Designated Reserves. The Finance Team will include ESG filters (Environmental, Social, Governance) while researching the investment opportunities. Missions Board Update September 2022

 Before After Change is in the air! You have probably noticed a few changes around the Food Pantry last month as we work to make the pantry integrate into Skyland's operations.  We are working to winterize the pantry next and hope we can do that by October before the rains come. Outside Pantry The front porch has been cleared and we are working to get the pantry winterized before the rains come.  There are two refrigerators and two metal shelves on the left front side of the church below the handicap ramp.  We chose this spot since it is the least sunny, easiest to access and would not require us to add a driveway between the church and the shed.  That area is too steep for disabled people to use.  New Shelving The two new metal shelves are up and running. They were paid for from the Mission Board budget. They even kept things dry with our tiny 5 minute recent rains.
