Message from Rev. Melanie for May 2022

Wisdom is with the aged, and understanding in length of days. --Job 12:12

Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. --1 Timothy 4:12

Happy Easter!  Easter is more than just one day of shouting "Alleluia!" hunting eggs, eating chocolate, and rejoicing at the once-again empty tomb.  Easter is a whole season, seven weeks to celebrate resurrection, new life, and new opportunities.

As we celebrate this season right alongside celebrating the cautious opening up of our society as the pandemic seems to wane, it is a great time to take a look at ourselves and at our congregation, at who is present and who isn't, at how to build connections between generations.

Last Year's Soothing Series grew out of a desire for intergenerational connections.  Young women took time from work and family and home to teach and to learn from each other and feel a new kind of joyful connection.  Older women braved technological challenges to teach and learn from each other and feel a new kind of joyful connection.

The generations represented in our community and in our congregation need each other.  We need the wisdom of our elders and the understanding of the world of the youngers.  We need steadiness that comes with history and adventurousness that comes with energy.

Let us look deep in our hearts and ask ourselves how will we honor the history and traditions that come from 135 years of being Skyland Church while at the same time welcome new expressions of following Jesus in 2022.

On Easter there were people in worship ranging in age from a few days old  to 101 years.  It was remarkable!  The children brought such amazing energy and joy.  It is said that every Sunday is a little Easter.  This is why there are 46 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter but only 40 days in Lent (which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Easter). On the six Sundays in between we break from the self-reflection of Lent and celebrate resurrection.

I hope that we will see this wide range of ages in church more often.  I don't have the answers as to how to bring that about, but I would like to continue the conversation.

We need each other.  Young ones need older ones and older ones need younger ones.  Let's work on being there for each other.
