Food Pantry Update December 2021

 

SKYLAND COMMUNITY CHURCH FREE FOOD PANTRY

The Food Pantry has been found.  Every day 5-10 families drive up and get that extra "cup or sugar" that their kind neighbors at Skyland Church have been offering over a year on the front porch.  Those items that we can give change every week. The meat, milk, eggs and cheese go most quickly.  We always have enough canned veggies, bread and staples like pasta, cereal and snacks.  Want to donate?  We always need chili, soups with pop tops and baking items like oil, flour, sugar and spices.  Hot drinks are nice to have during the winter too. 

We are winter proofed from the wind, rain and critters, but we would love it if an elf showed up and painted those plywood boards and the cabinets with white paint:).  They will come back down when the rains subside.   We have lovely thank you flags that were added by pantry volunteer Jan Parker this week.  Thanks light, thanks water, thanks home, thanks food now grace the porch.  Thanks Jan:)

This month we have gotten so many wonderful donations from our 6 food distribution sites: whole chickens, lovely cheeses, beautiful cases of apples and oranges. Our neighbors have donated persimmons and pomegranates.  The gifts keep on giving! This month Lakeside School collected food and toiletries for the pantry and we got lovely soaps for dishes, clothes, hair and bodies that will last for a week or two.  The toilet paper and paper towels are our fastest taken item!   Together We Will Indivisible Los Gatos donates items at the end of every month. 

Shannon Edwards is still looking for substitute pantry workers. And she would like to find someone willing to handle calling to get substitute pantry workers for those who leave town.  Anyone know a young person looking for community hours?  Happy to train new folks to keep the pantry stocked every day!  It takes a village.  Thanks to our wonderful volunteer team of 30:)  This month a "Secret Santa" sent thank yous and gift cards to the Homeless Garden Project as thank yous to all who help.

  The Finance Team added a new member, Jackie Seymour and a consultant, Terrie Landini to our team in June. In late June the Finance team met and agreed upon a process to make recommendations as to the management, use and investment of our monies for the benefit of our Skyland Church community. We divided into two sub-groups to research opportunities and to develop rules and policies as well as recommendations for the use of the monies. We will keep in mind the history of the Milberry fund and the Endowment. One sub-group is tasked with research on the Milberry Fund and Endowment Investments. The other sub-group is researching opportunities for the Board Designated Reserves. The Finance Team will include ESG filters (Environmental, Social, Governance) while researching the investment opportunities.
